Performing one of the Valley’s first open heart surgeries in 1958, Children’s Hospital’s Willson Heart Center has pioneered cardiac care for half a century. A $500,000 donation from The Radin Foundation in Fresno helped the Hospital upgrade essential equipment for a new pediatric catheterization lab which opened in the Spring of 2010. Each year, Willson Heart Center specialists provide treatment to more than 8,000 infants and children with a multitude of heart ailments including congenital and pediatric acquired cardiovascular disease. Like many of the tertiary level services Children’s provides, the pediatric catheterization lab represents the only service of its kind between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. “We are grateful to The Radin Foundation for their support for our cardiac patients as we move forward with our new state-of-the-art cath lab,” said Dr. James Prochazka, medical director of cardiology at The Willson Heart Center. Specifically, the contribution helped fund a new angulating biplane X-ray system that will provide a full range of clinical angulations and options for cardiovascular and electrophysiology studies.
Recognizing Children’s Hospital as an “anchor institution” integral to the community’s vitality, economic development and growth, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation awarded the only children’s hospital between Los Angeles and the Bay Area $250,000 toward its expansion project. Bank of America supports nonprofits focused on healthcare, education, and access to arts and culture – areas the bank feels impact the community the most. One of the main factors considered when awarding an anchor grant is whether the community deems the organization an essential institution to the area. “Given the Hospital’s successful 57- year history, 2,700 employees and more than 450 physicians, and delivering exceptional care to patients from Bakersfield to Stockton, and the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Central Coast, it’s clear that our community considers Children’s an anchor institution,” said Rudy Medina, Market President, Bank of America, in Fresno. “The Hospital’s expansion will deliver a higher level of care and help meet the growing population’s critical healthcare needs.”
