 The Story of the Playhouse
Carole Sordi 1946-2010

A member of the Alegria Guild for 27 years, Carole dedicated herself to the care of sick and injured children with a heart of gold. “The Raffle Lady” faithfully managed the cash raffle for Day in the Country for many years.

Carole had a secret wish in her heart… to offer a playhouse /clubhouse as a prize and ALL proceeds would benefit Children’s Hospital. She imagined the hours and hours of joy a private space for children would give. Each year planning a debt-free playhouse was met with problems until the spring of 2010, when a local builder, Jeremy Near of Madera made it all possible. Jeremy and Carole shared her dream… and then Jeremy started construction. Sadly, Carole never saw the finished playhouse. On August 1st, Carole passed away of complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig disease). In October 2010, the first Playhouse for Kids was raffled at Alegria Guild’s Day in the Country event.

In 2011 Alegria Guild members continued Carole’s dream wish with a new Playhouse for Kids. Due to the generous donations from local businesses in the Central Valley, 100% of the raffle donations went directly to Children’s Hospital Central California.

This year, with hope for many more to follow, we will be able to carry on this dream in memory of a gracious, caring lady and her secret wish for children.
